TORONTO (April 16, 2013) – CTV and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today a confirmed list of presenters that will take the stage for CTV’s live broadcast of THE 2013 JUNO AWARDS on Sunday April 21. Hosted by superstar Michael Bublé, the awards will be presented by a diverse range of Canadian Talent – from rapper Maestro Fresh Wes (@MaestroFreshWes), singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards (@kittythefool), and hitmakers Dragonette (@dragonette) to fan favourite Jim Cuddy (@JimCuddy), up and comer Victoria Duffield (@VDuffield), and musical legend Anne Murray (@annemurray1). Nova Scotia isn’t normally thought of as a hotbed for country music but for Dean Brody, it’s the perfect place to call home.

B.C.-born Brody moved to the small south shore community of Chester years a few years ago after spending some time in Nashville and was surprised by just how big the appetite was for the type of music he’s made a career out of.

“I figured it would all just be Irish and Scottish-inspired music but there are people there that definitely love their country music,” says Brody, who is nominated for a JUNO Award for Country Album of the Year for his third album “Dirt.”

“I’ve always respected the music that came out of the East Coast. To live there now and to be around that type of community, it’s great.”

And even though he hasn’t swapped his cowboy boots for a fiddle, the East Coast influences can definitely be heard on “It’s Friday,” a song that features a collaboration with the quintessential East Coat band – Great Big Sea.

“(Lead singer) Alan Doyle called me up one day and said, ‘Man I dig this song. Let’s do it.’”

They filmed the video for the song down by the water in Flat Rock, Nfld., which turned out to be a big party, with local residents and even a wedding party joining in.

“We didn’t plan that,” recalls Brody with a laugh. “We were on the roof of this building doing (what seemed like) the 700th take of the day and a wedding party was just up on the hill there overlooking the harbour and they were clapping, hooting and hollering and I was like, ‘Come on let’s go!’ and so we ran across the street and the video guys were running across the street behind us. It was a real natural moment. It was really cool.”

He says his fans, in particular the ones from the East Coast, have really responded well to the song.

“They just love it. A lot of them, it’s their favourite song so I’m really lucky as far as the kind of music I can record. I can record a real traditional Kentucky Bluegrass kind of song or I can do an East Coast song or kind of a rocker (song), my fans allow me to.”

One of those ‘rocker’ songs that has created plenty of buzz was the first single off “Dirt,” called “Canadian Girls.” With lyrics about looking sexy in a toque to playing hockey and watching “Degrassi,” the patriotic song struck a chord with Canadians and was the first song of Brody’s to reach the top 40 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart.

“I tried to write it for the girls that were closest to me in my life. I wrote it for them and they thought it was cool.”

“Dirt” also earned Brody two Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs) in 2012 (he’s won six in total) –for Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year.

Brody, who just wrapped up a sold-out cross-Canada tour, says he is pleased the album has been so well received, especially coming off the success of 2010’s “Trail of Life.”

“Coming off (that album) was challenging because it was such a big record for me so I had to come up with something on the heels of that and I felt like there was a lot of pressure,” says Brody.

“I don’t know if it was so much externally but for myself (I felt it) and I had to kind of just forget about the last record and just write a bunch of songs and hope it worked out, and it did.”

Brody, who plans to release a new record in the fall, has also been busy working with The Dean Brody Foundation, an organization he created in 2011 to help young girls caught up in child prostitution in Brazil.

After an eye-opening trip to the country a year earlier, Brody set out to create a safe house for the girls where they could get help and build their self-esteem through counseling, education and the arts.

A second house has just been opened and Brody says he is already seeing the positive effects the program has had.

“Some of the girls, they’re getting older and their lives and futures are totally different because of the program there and the people working on the ground with them.”

Brody says it means a lot to him to be able to use his success as a way to give back.

“Even when I was a kid I thought if I was ever lucky enough to be famous or have a career in music that maybe I could help someone.”

He hopes to head down to Brazil sometime again soon, but before that he will be heading to the JUNOs in Regina.

This is Brody’s second JUNO nomination (he was also nominated for country album of the year in 2011) and he says it feels great to be recognized again this year.

“Any time your peers look at your work and say ‘what we think you’re doing is great,’ it’s cool. It means a lot.”
